Our Idea
Man has bio-culturally collectively evolved over time, as reflected in his lifestyle pursuits and expressions. The reflections of emotions are evident in the forms, structures and media of expression. Of all the forms of media, films are the most contemporary and powerful media of expression, which profoundly impacts the human psyche. Every individual is either an artist, a director, a spectator or a contributor to film media, who consciously or unconsciously cannot ignore or escape from the tug-of-war of daily routine, social oppression and societal pressure. Most filmmakers are passionate about their forms of expression - filmmaking - despite many hurdles like financial constraints along with political and ideological differences. Though brilliant in their creative content, many documentations remain away from the spotlight and consequently from the audience spectrum. The time has come for all filmmakers to address the problems collectively. With this objective, we are creating 'Bihangam' as a platform to help and develop the art of film making. It will embrace all filmmakers, scriptwriters, actors, music composers, and people involved in allied activities that are part of film making. It will also include film lovers and critics. We are progressive in our thoughts and beliefs for the betterment of the society and against all sorts of discrimination, inequalities and intolerance. We sincerely hope filmmakers and appreciators will join us to uphold films as a medium of social consciousness, dialogue exchange and fostering brotherhood and empathy, bridging cross-cultural variations.
This initiative is a step towards reaching a broader viewer base. In the current scenario of media usage for self-promotion and gratification, a section of people residing in cities, suburbs and rural areas are still trying to uphold their views and opinions through films. Our platform will strive to create a bridge between the creators and the viewers.
Present Situation
Let the disparity in access to sustainable resources like food, shelter and environment,
fundamental rights, gender discrimination among the common masses both in rural and urban diaspora, violation of human rights across borders, genocide, resurgence of colonial dominance in new avtaar, communal strife get duly recognised through the prying and discerning lens of the film makers and film lovers as a collective whole.
Our appeal
The most powerful medium of expression of the present society is film. Film is such a creative medium which expresses many unspoken words and dreams of not only an individual but also collective emotion and understanding of society and no one can refute the fact that films leave a powerful impact on the collective psyche of a group. Nadine Labaki, the noted Lebanese film director opined, “Cinema is not only about making people dream. It’s about changing things and making people think.”- In sync with this chain of thoughts, BIHANGAM has embarked on its journey with an aim to act as a channel of exchange between director and artists, exchange of thoughts with the audience and as a medium of connection. BIHANGAM is an earnest expression of wish to work collectively in a world where everyone wants to travel alone. A new language of film will transpire with the exchange of thoughts, expertise and experience is our hope. The journey of this collective dream will commence with a film festival.
It is our earnest request to all directors, technical staff and film buffs for wholehearted
participation in this festival. At the very onset, we want to make it clear that we are only
concerned with the thoughts and ideas pivoted on the creation of the film which would advocate a progress in societal advancement by removing discrimination, disharmony and displeasure. We heartily welcome you all to the arena of UDAAN film festival.
